The lesson

It is about a man named Elijah and a chariot of fire! This story comes from the book of 2 Kings, chapter 2. That is in the Old Testament, where we read about God's power. God showed His great power by taking Elijah to heaven. Guess what? He sent a chariot of fire! Can you imagine a chariot made of fire? It might look like a big, bright lorry or a matatu with flames all around! What do you think that chariot looked like? Maybe it had huge wheels of fire and horses that were glowing bright!

Who was Elijah? Elijah was a great prophet—a special messenger from God. Elijah was God's messenger to the people of Israel. Think of him like a wise elder in our village—someone who teaches us what is right. God gave Elijah power to do amazing miracles, like making fire come down from heaven! Elijah's time on earth was ending. God had a special plan. He sent a fiery chariot—like a big lorry made of fire—to take Elijah up to heaven! Isn't that wonderful?

Worked examples

The Journey to Bethel and Jericho

Elijah and Elisha walked from place to place. It is like a journey from Nairobi to Mombasa. Look! Elijah and Elisha were close friends. They reached a place called Bethel. The sons of the prophets told Elisha, 'Elijah will be taken away today.' But Elisha said, 'I will not leave you.' He wanted to stay with Elijah. Then they continued to Jericho. The same thing happened again! The prophets also knew Elijah would be taken. Elisha still stayed with Elijah. He did not run away. Elisha stayed with Elijah all the way. That shows true friendship. He loved Elijah and never left his side.

The Chariot of Fire – God’s Power!

This amazing story! The title is 'The Chariot of Fire – God's Power!' Can you say that with me? God's power is so big – bigger than anything! First, Elijah struck the Jordan River with his cloak. What happened? The water parted! Just like when you walk through a dry riverbed, the water moved aside like a road. Imagine that — a big river opening up! Then, suddenly, a chariot of fire appeared — like a lorry made of fire, with horses of fire! Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind, like a strong wind lifting a kite. Elisha saw it and cried, 'My father, my father! The chariots of Israel!' God's power is so great — He can do anything! At this picture. Can you see the fiery chariot? It looks like a big, bright lorry moving in the sky. There is Elijah being taken up! This shows us that God's power is like nothing we have ever seen. He can split rivers, send fire from heaven, and take people to heaven. Isn't that wonderful? Children, remember: God is very, very powerful. He can do anything. Let's think about how we can trust God's power in our own lives.

What Did Elisha Learn?

Our big question: What Did Elisha Learn? We just saw how Elijah went up to heaven in a chariot of fire. Elisha saw it all! What do you think Elisha learned that day? First, Elisha saw the chariot. This was not an ordinary car or lorry. It was a special chariot from God. Elisha learned that God was truly with Elijah. God did not leave his friend. At this table. It shows how Elisha felt before and after the chariot. Before, he was very sad because his friend was leaving. After he saw the chariot, he was happy because he knew God was in charge. Have you ever felt sad and then happy? Maybe when you said goodbye to a friend going to another town, but then you remembered God is with them? We are going to do a Think-Pair-Share. First, turn to the person next to you. Think about this: When is a time you felt sad, but then remembered God was with you? Talk to your partner about it. Good thinking, everyone! Elisha learned that even when things are hard—like losing a friend—God is always with us. Remember that next time you feel scared or sad. God is like a friend who never leaves.

Memory Verse – 2 Kings 2:11

It's time to learn our memory verse from the story of Elijah. At the top — 'Memory Verse'. This verse helps us remember what happened. It comes from 2 Kings, chapter 2, verse 11. That's where we find this special story. Here is the verse: 'Suddenly a chariot of fire appeared… and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.' Imagine a chariot — like a big lorry, but made of fire! A whirlwind is a very strong wind that spins around. God took Elijah up to heaven in a very special way. I will say a part, and you repeat after me. 'Suddenly a chariot of fire appeared…' (pause) … 'and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.' Wonderful! Draw a picture in your mind. Close your eyes if you like. Think of the hills — maybe like our hills here in Kenya. See the fiery chariot and the whirlwind. What do you see? You can share with the person next to you.

How Can We See God’s Power Today?

Children, today we are going to talk about how we can see God's power. We see God's power every day! Think about the rain that makes our plants grow. Think about the sun that rises every morning. That is God's power at work. We can also pray and ask God to show His power in our lives. He hears our prayers and He helps us. I want you to think about one way you have seen God's power this week. Maybe you saw a beautiful sunrise, or you felt your mother's love.

Story Review & Prayer

Let's review the wonderful story of Elijah and Elisha. Remember how God showed His power? First, Elijah and Elisha walked together to the river. Then – wow! – the water parted, just like a big gate opening. Then a chariot of fire, like a bright red lorry, came from heaven and took Elijah up! God's power is so big and amazing. Repeat after me: Dear God, thank You for showing Your power to Elijah and Elisha. Help us to trust You every day. Amen. Remember, God loves you and His power is always with you. That's the end of our lesson. Goodbye, everyone!
