The lesson

We are going to hear a wonderful story about a very brave man. Can you guess who? A Brave Man Named Daniel! Daniel lived a long time ago in a place called Babylon. Have you ever been far from home? Daniel was far from his home, but he never forgot to love God. Let's read what Daniel did. The first point says: Daniel loved God in Babylon. Even though he was in a new land with new rules, Daniel chose to love and obey God. That is real bravery! The next point: He prayed every day. The king said, 'No praying to anyone except me!' But Daniel did not stop. He went to his room, opened his window, and prayed three times a day. Just like you might talk to your parents every day, Daniel talked to God. Because Daniel obeyed God instead of the king, the king was angry. He threw Daniel into a den of hungry lions! A den is like a big cave where lions sleep. Imagine that! Daniel trusted God. The wonderful news is that God sent an angel to shut the lions' mouths. Daniel was safe! God saved him because he was faithful. What can we learn from Daniel? We can be brave and trust God even when it's hard.

At the title: The King's Tricky Law. The story begins with some jealous leaders. They were jealous of Daniel because he was a good leader. They tricked the king. They told King Darius to make a law: for 30 days, everyone could only pray to the king, not to God. Daniel loved God very much. He went home and prayed as usual, like he always did. He was not afraid to obey God. Daniel chose to obey God instead of the king's law. That is very brave! Next, we will see what happens when the king finds out.

Do you remember Daniel? He trusted God even when the king gave a bad rule. The king had to throw Daniel into a den full of lions. Listen carefully to what happened. The king was sad. He said to Daniel, 'Your God will save you.' Then they rolled a big stone over the mouth of the den. The king could not sleep the whole night. He was very worried. God sent an angel. The angel shut the lions' mouths. Daniel was safe! God saved him because Daniel trusted God with all his heart. Remember: even when things look scary, God is with us. Just like Daniel, we can trust God to take care of us. Good job, everyone!

Everyone! Our title is 'God's Miraculous Rescue.' Remember how Daniel was thrown into the lions' den? Early in the morning, the king ran as fast as he could to the lions' den. He was so worried! He shouted, 'Daniel, has your God, the God you serve all the time, been able to save you from the lions?' The king was asking, 'Can God really rescue His friend?' What do you think – can God save Daniel? Then Daniel answered! He said, 'My God sent His angel, and the angel shut the lions' mouths. I am not hurt at all!' The lions were hungry and strong, but God was stronger. Daniel was safe because he trusted God. God shut the lions' mouths just like we close a door! The king was so, so happy! He was overjoyed! He made a new law for everyone in the land: 'Everyone must honour the true God, because He is the one who saves!' God rescued Daniel, and the king learned that only God is truly powerful. Let's give a cheer for God's great rescue!

Worked examples

Daniel's Prayer Life

Let's learn about a brave man named Daniel. He prayed to God every day, even when a bad law said he could not. Watch how he did it. First, Daniel heard the new law. The law said, 'Do not pray to anyone except the king.' But Daniel loved God more than he feared the king. What did he do? Second, he went to his room. He did not hide. He did not change his usual time. He just went to his room like any other day. Third, he opened his window toward Jerusalem. That was the city of God. He wanted to show everyone that he was not ashamed to pray. Fourth, he knelt down and thanked God. He bowed down to God, not to the king. Daniel trusted God more than he feared the king. He was like a strong lion in the savannah — not afraid. We can be brave like Daniel when we trust God. Always pray, no matter what.

King Darius Learns to Trust God

Another story — King Darius Learns to Trust God. In this story, we see how a worried king becomes joyful because God is so powerful. First, the king tried very hard to save Daniel from the lions' den. He tried all day long! The law was like a big, heavy stone — it could not be changed. Have you ever tried to break a rule, even when you wanted to? The king was very sad because he could not help his friend. God had a plan. Then the king went to the den and called out to Daniel. He said, 'Your God, whom you serve continually, will deliver you.' The king trusted that God would take care of Daniel. It's like when you are afraid of a big dog, but your father comes and the dog runs away. The king believed that God is stronger than anything. After God rescued Daniel — no lions hurt him at all! — the king was so happy! He praised God and told everyone in the whole country to respect the true God. The king learned that even a ruler must bow down to God. God is more powerful than any king or lion. We see that King Darius moved from worry to joy. He learned that God is always in control. What a wonderful lesson for all of us!

Being Faithful Like Daniel in Kenya Today

Another example of being faithful like Daniel. Imagine you are a Grade 2 learner here in Kenya. Think about this: if Daniel were in your school today, what would he do when a friend tells him not to pray before lunch? Here's the situation: your friend says 'Don't pray before lunch.' That's like the king's order in Daniel's time, but it's a small test of your faith. Option one: You can pray quietly in your heart. No one will know except you and God. Daniel might have done that sometimes. Option two: You can be brave and say, 'I want to thank God for my food.' That's standing up for your faith, just like Daniel did when he prayed openly. Both options show you love God more than what others think. That's what it means to be faithful like Daniel. Great work, everyone!

Practice questions

  • Who threw Daniel into the den of lions? Was it King Darius, King Nebuchadnezzar, the king's helpers, or Daniel himself?
  • For the second question: What did God send to protect Daniel in the lions' den? Was it an angel, a lion, a soldier with a sword, or a big stone?
  • Done, everyone! These were easy questions to help us remember the key parts of the story.
  • Asks: Why was Daniel thrown into the lion's den? The correct answer is 'He prayed to God even though the law said not to.
  • Asks: What should you do when someone tells you to stop trusting God? The answer is: stay faithful like Daniel, because God is with you.
  • These questions remind us that faithfulness isn't always easy, but God never leaves us. Think about a time you had to choose to obey God even when it was hard.
