The lesson

Let's give a big, warm welcome to everyone, including our friends here. My name is Teacher [Your Name], and I am so excited to learn with you this morning. Can anyone guess who that baby might be? Our lesson is called 'The Kindness of the Wise Men.' Let's look at what we will learn. We will read from the Bible, in the book of Matthew, chapter 2, verses 1 to 12. Most importantly, we will think about how we can show kindness, just like the Wise Men did.

Today we'll hear a beautiful story from the Bible — The Story of the Wise Men. A long time ago, some very wise men far away in the East saw a bright, new star in the sky. They knew this star meant something very special had happened. They decided to follow that star! Imagine walking for many, many days under the stars. They kept walking until the star stopped right over a little house where baby Jesus was. When they found Him, they bowed down and gave Him very special gifts — gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These were the best things they could give to a new king. What are these gifts? Gold is a shiny, precious metal, like what we use for fancy jewelry. Frankincense and myrrh are special tree sap that dries into a sweet-smelling perfume. The wise men brought the most valuable things they had to honor baby Jesus.

Who were the Wise Men? Let's find out! The Wise Men, also called Magi, were very clever people who studied the stars. They saw a special star and knew a new king was born. First, they studied the stars. They watched the sky carefully. Second, they came from faraway lands. Maybe from Ethiopia or Arabia — places far from here in Kenya. That was a long journey! Finally, when they found Jesus, they were so happy! They bowed down and worshipped Him with joy. They even brought gifts. The Wise Men show us that Jesus is special for everyone.

The three special gifts the wise men brought to baby Jesus. Each gift tells us something important about who Jesus is. First is gold. Gold is a very special metal — it's shiny and valuable, like the most precious thing you can think of. In Kenya, we know that gold is rare and precious. The wise men gave gold to honor Jesus as a King. Second is frankincense. This is a sweet-smelling resin that people burned like incense in worship. You know when we burn ubani in church, and it smells so good? That's like frankincense. The wise men gave it to show that Jesus is God, worthy of our worship. Third is myrrh. This is an oil used for anointing — like when we use special oil to bless someone. Myrrh was used for healing and also for preparing a body for burial. This gift showed that Jesus would one day suffer and die for us. Why these three gifts? Each one honored Jesus in a special way: gold for His kingship, frankincense for His divinity, and myrrh for His humanity and sacrifice. Such thoughtful gifts!

Boys and girls, let's start with our title: 'Following the Star.' That means someone saw a star and decided to go where it led them. A long time ago, some very wise men looked up into the night sky. What did they see? They saw a very bright star! They decided to follow that star all the way to a special baby. That baby was Jesus. Do you ever see stars at night? Here in Kenya, when you go to the village or a rural area away from the city lights, the sky is full of bright stars! It is so beautiful. Just like the wise men saw their star, we can see many stars twinkling in our own Kenyan sky. The wise men followed a star. What about us? We can also follow good examples! Maybe you have a big brother who is kind, or a friend who shares their snacks. Just like the wise men followed the star, you can follow people who do good things. That makes you a wise person too! Today we learned: The wise men saw a star and followed it to Jesus. We see bright stars in Kenya, and we can follow good examples. Great job, everyone!

Worked examples

Sharing Snacks

A story about a girl named Amina. This is our first worked example — a chance to practice what we've been learning. One day, Amina has some mandazi, a tasty fried snack. Her friend has none. What do you think Amina should do? She gives some of her mandazi to her friend, even though she doesn't have to. That's what kindness looks like. This is just like the Wise Men in our Bible story. They had special, expensive gifts — gold, frankincense, and myrrh — and they chose to give them to baby Jesus. They didn't keep everything for themselves. They shared something good. Here's the big idea for today: Kindness means giving something good to someone else. Just like Amina shared her mandazi secret recipe with her friend, and just like the Wise Men shared their special gifts with Jesus, we too can show kindness by sharing what we have.

Helping a Lost Child

Another example. It's called 'Helping a Lost Child'. See how this story ties back to the Wise Men and the star. John was at the market when he saw a little girl crying. She had lost her mother. John did not walk away — he stayed and helped her find her mother. That is kindness in action! Remember the star that the Wise Men followed? It led them to Jesus. For John, his 'star' was his caring heart. It led him to help the little girl. We all have that star inside us — it is the light of kindness God gave us. The Wise Men followed the star to find Jesus. John followed his heart to help the little girl find her mother. Both were looking for someone special, and both succeeded because they did not give up. Here is the big idea: kindness means helping others find what they need. It could be finding a lost toy, helping a friend with homework, or just giving a hug. Let's all be like John and the Wise Men — let the star of kindness guide us. Great work, everyone!

Giving a Gift to Cheer Up

Our third example: Giving a Gift to Cheer Up. This story teaches us how a simple gift can make someone feel better. In this story, Wanjiku sees her friend feeling sad. What does she do? She gives her friend a drawing. That's a small but thoughtful way to show she cares. Remember the Wise Men? They brought special gifts to baby Jesus — gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Those gifts showed love and honor. Just like Wanjiku, they used gifts to make someone feel special. Kindness doesn't have to be big or expensive. A simple gift — like a drawing, a card, or even a hug — can show someone you care. Let's remember to be kind like Wanjiku and the Wise Men!

Practice questions
