The lesson

I'm your teacher, and I'm so excited to explore 'Mon École' — My School — with you. This is a topic that's all about your everyday life, so it's going to be fun and very practical. By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to name five school facilities in French, like 'la salle de classe' for classroom, and you'll know how to say where they are using simple phrases like 'à côté de' or 'en face de'. You'll also learn to answer questions about where things are. Here's the best part — we're going to connect everything to your own school here in Kenya. Start thinking about the layout of your school — where is your classroom? Where is the library? We'll use that as our guide. First, I want you to listen to the French words for some common school places. Repeat after me in your head or quietly to yourself. Don't worry about perfect pronunciation yet — we'll practice together. The slide shows the key points. We'll start with the five facilities: la salle de classe (classroom), la bibliothèque (library), la cantine (cafeteria), le laboratoire (laboratory), and le terrain de sport (sports field). Can you find these in your own school? Think about where they are located.

Let's learn French words for school facilities! First, la salle de classe — that means 'classroom'. Repeat after me: la salle de classe. Next, la bibliothèque — the library. Say it with me: la bibliothèque. Third, la cantine — the cafeteria. Repeat: la cantine. Next, les toilettes — the toilets. Remember, it's plural. Repeat: les toilettes. Finally, le terrain de sport — the sports field. Repeat: le terrain de sport. Great job, everyone! Practice these words at home.

That we've learned the key rooms in a school, let's look at how to say where they are located. We'll use preposition phrases like 'à droite de' and 'à gauche de'. First, let's review the key prepositions. 'À droite de' means 'on/to the right of'. 'À gauche de' means 'on/to the left of'. 'En face de' means 'opposite'. 'près de' means 'near'. Notice that 'de' often changes to 'd'' before a vowel, like 'à droite d''. For example, 'La bibliothèque est en face du laboratoire.' Now it's your turn! You have some sentences to complete using the prepositions. For number 1: 'La bibliothèque est __________ de la cantine.' Which preposition would you use? Think about your own school. Also, check the 'Useful words' box for vocabulary help.

Excellent work everyone! First, let's revisit the school facilities — les installations. We learned five important places around school. We have la salle de classe (the classroom), la bibliothèque (the library), la cantine (the cafeteria), les toilettes (the restrooms), and le terrain de sport (the sports field). Can you say them with me? Repeat after each one. Next, we learned les mots de localisation — location words that help us describe where things are. We covered à droite (on the right), à gauche (on the left), en face (opposite), and près de (near). These words are so useful for giving directions in French. Here's your challenge — the défi! In your next French class, I want you to describe where the library is using the phrases we learned. For example: 'La bibliothèque est à droite de la salle de classe.' Try it! This will really help you remember.

Worked examples

– Listening and Repeating

We'll practise listening and repeating. Pay close attention to the pronunciation. The instruction is simple: listen to the question, then repeat the answer. I will say each phrase clearly, and you will repeat it back to me. First, the question: 'Où est la bibliothèque ?' – This means 'Where is the library?' Listen carefully: Où (like 'oo') est (like 'ay') la bibliothèque (bee-blee-oh-tek). Say it with me: Où est la bibliothèque? The answer: 'La bibliothèque est à droite.' – 'The library is on the right.' Notice 'à droite' (ah drwaht) means 'on the right'. Repeat after me: La bibliothèque est à droite. The pair once more: question then answer.

– Read and Match

Class, let's look at this matching activity. We have a school map with places labelled in English, and French words on the side. Your job is to match each French word to the correct place. First, let's look at 'la bibliothèque'. The word 'bibliothèque' means library in French. In a school, the library is where we find books. Which place on the map shows a library? Yes, the building labelled 'Library'! We match 'la bibliothèque' with 'Library'. The second match: 'la salle de classe'. 'Salle' means room, 'classe' means class. It's the classroom. Here is the 'Classroom' label on the map. We match 'la salle de classe' to 'Classroom'. You have two more to match: 'le laboratoire' (laboratory) and 'la cantine' (cafeteria). At the map and use your vocabulary list to complete the rest on your worksheet.

– Mini Dialogue

Let's turn to Worked Example 3: a mini dialogue. This will show you a simple conversation between two students finding their way around school. Listen carefully as I read the dialogue. Student A asks: 'Excuse-moi, où sont les toilettes?' — 'Excuse me, where are the toilets?' Say it with me: 'Excuse-mwa, oo soñ lay twa-let'. Student B answers: 'Les toilettes sont en face de la cantine.' — 'The toilets are opposite the canteen.' Repeat: 'Lay twa-let soñ on fass de la can-teen.' Great! Practice each line a few times. It's your turn to practice in pairs. Use the same question structure, but swap out 'les toilettes' with other school facilities like 'la bibliothèque' (library) or 'la salle de classe' (classroom). For the answer, place the location after 'sont' — for example, 'La bibliothèque sont en face de la cantine.' Try three different places with your partner. Go ahead!
