The lesson

A place of worship is where people go to pray and learn about God. Different religions have different places of worship. This is a Mandir. Hindus go to the Mandir to pray and sing songs to God. Next we have a Gurudwara. Last is a Vihara. Buddhists go to the Vihara to meditate and learn from monks. Remember, even though these places are different, we must always respect all places of worship.

A mandir is a Hindu place of worship. Hindus go to the mandir to pray to gods like Rama and Krishna. Here are some important facts about a mandir. A mandir is a Hindu temple. Inside, you will find statues called murtis and an altar. People show respect by removing their shoes before entering. Sometimes they also cover their heads. In our country Kenya, we have mandirs too! There is a mandir in Nairobi and another in Mombasa. You might have seen one before. Remember: a mandir is a Hindu temple with murtis and an altar. Always take off your shoes before going inside.

Let's learn about the Sikh place of worship, called the Gurudwara. The word Gurudwara means 'door to the Guru'. The Guru is the teacher, and this is like the house where Sikhs come to learn and pray together. Inside a Gurudwara, the holy book called the Guru Granth Sahib is kept under a special canopy. Everyone sits on the floor – this shows that all people are equal. After the prayers, a free meal called langar is shared with everyone. Some Gurudwaras in Kenya are in Kisumu and Nairobi. The Gurudwara is a welcoming place for prayer, learning, and showing kindness to others through sharing meals.

Say it with me: vi-ha-ra. A vihara is like a monastery – a quiet place where Buddhist monks and nuns live, meditate, and learn. Imagine a calm, peaceful garden where people go to think and pray. Inside a vihara you will often see a large statue of Buddha, and sometimes colorful prayer flags hanging from the ceiling. When visitors go to a vihara, they show respect by taking off their shoes before entering. They also walk quietly and speak softly – just like you would in a library. This helps everyone feel peaceful and focused. In Kenya, you can find Buddhist viharas right here in Nairobi! If you ever visit one, remember to be quiet and respectful. Great job, everyone! Next time we will look at another place of worship.

At what we've learned about respecting places of worship. In the mandir, we remove our shoes, cover our heads, and sit on the floor. This shows respect. In the gurudwara, we do the same thing — remove shoes, cover head, sit on the floor. These customs help us show respect. In the vihara, we also remove our shoes, cover our heads, and sit on the floor. All three places have these special customs. Most importantly, respecting other people's places of worship shows kindness and understanding. Kenya has many different religions, and we can all live together peacefully.

Worked examples

Visiting a Mandir

Let's learn about visiting a mandir. A mandir is a Hindu place of worship. It's a holy place, just like our churches and mosques. Here are some steps to show respect. Step 1: Remove your shoes before entering. This shows you respect the holy place, just like we take off our shoes before entering a home. Step 2: Walk quietly and bow to the murti. A murti is a statue of a god or goddess. Bowing is a way of saying 'I respect you'. Then step 3: Sit on the floor and fold your hands to pray. Folding hands is a common sign of prayer. Step 4: Do not point your feet towards the altar. In many cultures, feet are considered unclean. We keep our feet pointing away from holy things. Remember: A mandir is a holy place. Always be calm and respectful. Great job learning these steps!

Visiting a Gurudwara

Another special place of worship. This is a Gurudwara — the place where Sikh people go to pray. Just like we learned about visiting a mandir, there are also special ways to behave when visiting a Gurudwara. Let's learn about how to show respect inside a Gurudwara. Step one: Cover your head with a scarf or cloth. Before entering, we must cover our heads as a sign of respect. Many Gurudwaras even have scarves you can borrow at the door. Step two: Remove your shoes and wash your hands before entering. This keeps the prayer hall clean, and washing hands shows we are ready to go in with a pure heart. Step three: Sit cross-legged on the floor. Make sure you do not stretch your legs out toward the holy book — that would be disrespectful. Sit quietly and respectfully. Step four: Accept the langar — which is a free meal given to everyone — with both hands and say thank you. The langar is a special tradition where everyone, no matter who they are, can share a meal together. What a beautiful way to show kindness! Great job, everyone! Remember: cover your head, take off shoes, sit cross-legged, and accept the langar with both hands. These actions show respect and love at the Gurudwara.

Visiting a Vihara

We are going to practice what we have learned. Imagine you are visiting a vihara — that is a Buddhist temple, just like a church is for Christians or a mosque is for Muslims. What do you think we should do to show respect? First, before you step inside the prayer hall, you must take off your shoes. This is a sign of respect. Think about how you remove your shoes before entering someone's home — it is the same idea here. Once inside, you will see a beautiful statue of Buddha. Always walk around it in a clockwise direction — that means turning to your right. This is another way of showing honor. Remember, a vihara is a quiet place for meditation and prayer. Keep your voice low, and do not run around. Just like in a library or in church, we use soft voices. Sometimes, people offer incense at the temple. If you do that, do it gently — light the stick, place it in the holder, and bow three times. Bowing is a way of saying 'I respect you' without using words. Great job, everyone! These four rules will help you show respect at any Buddhist temple.
