The lesson

Habari za asubuhi, wanafunzi! Today we begin a very special lesson: the conditions for swalah, our prayer. Before we pray, we must prepare ourselves. There are five conditions, or 'sharti' in Swahili, that we need to check. First, Taharah — we must be clean. Second, Wakati — pray at the right time. Third, Kibla — face Makkah. Fourth, dress properly — like wearing kanzu or hijab. Fifth, Niyyah — our intention in our heart. Throughout this lesson, we will learn each condition with examples from our daily life here in Kenya.

Class, let's start with the first condition for swalah — it's called Taharah, which means purity or cleanliness. Before we pray, we need to be clean. That means our body, our clothes, and even the place where we pray must be pure. Think about it — would you want to sit on a dirty mat to eat? For swalah, we want to be clean and fresh. A worked example. Here is Ali. Ali wants to pray Maghrib, the evening prayer. After playing football, he forgot to make wudu! What does he do? Ali goes to the tap. First he washes his hands, then his mouth, then his nose, then his face, then his arms up to the elbows, then he wipes his head, and finally washes his feet. He has made wudu, and he is clean for swalah. Done, Ali! Remember: if you have a small impurity like after using the toilet or sleeping, you do wudu. If it's a big impurity, you need ghusl — a full bath. That's for higher grades. For now, just remember: Taharah first, then swalah!

Great job, everyone! We have learned the five conditions for swalah. Let's quickly review them one more time. First, purity (taharah) – we do wudu. Second, time – pray at the right time, like Maghrib just after sunset. Third, Qibla – face Makkah. Fourth, dressing – wear clean and proper clothes like kanzu or hijab. Fifth, intention (niyyah) – make intention in your heart. Remember to check all these before every swalah! These conditions help our prayer be accepted in shaa Allah. Keep practicing and ask your parents or teacher if you are unsure. Jazakallah khair for your hard work!

Worked examples

Condition 2: Time (Waqt)

Condition number 2: Time. In Arabic we call it 'Waqt'. Every prayer has its own special time. Each of the five daily prayers has its own time. We cannot pray before that time or after that time. It's like a window — you have to pray when the window is open. An example. It's 1:00 PM on a school day in Nairobi. Aisha checks the mosque timetable. Dhuhr prayer starts at 12:30 PM and ends at 3:30 PM. Since it's 1:00 PM, she is right inside the time window. Knowing the prayer times helps us plan our day. You can find timetables at your mosque or even online. Great job, everyone!

Condition 3: Facing Qibla

Let's learn about Condition 3: Facing Qibla. This means we must face the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah when we pray. The Qibla is the direction of the Kaaba. Here in Kenya, we face roughly North-East. You can use a compass, a Qibla app on your phone, or look at the mihrab — that's the special niche in the mosque wall that shows the Qibla direction. Hassan lives in Mombasa. He wants to pray, so he takes his father's compass. He turns until the needle points to NE — North-East. He is facing the Qibla. Good job, Hassan! What if you are not sure which way to face? Don't worry. Do your best and make a good guess. Allah knows your effort and He accepts it. Remember, it is the intention that matters most.

Condition 4: Proper Dressing (Satr al-'Awrah)

Let's talk about our fourth condition for prayer: proper dressing. We must cover our awrah — that means our private parts — when we stand before Allah. The Arabic term 'Satr al-'Awrah' means covering our private parts. For boys, the awrah is from the navel to the knees. For girls, the awrah includes the whole body except the face and hands. That's why we wear modest clothes for swalah. At these examples. For boys: you can wear a kanzu or a long shirt with trousers that cover from your navel to your knees. For girls: wear a modest dress or a skirt and blouse, and remember to put on your hijab — the headscarf that covers your hair and neck. Also, our clothes must be clean and not see-through. Imagine Fatima: she has a school uniform with a short skirt. Before praying Dhuhr, she changes into a long skirt and adds her scarf. That's proper dressing! Remember: for prayer, we cover our awrah properly — boys from navel to knees, girls the whole body except face and hands. Always keep your clothes clean. This shows respect to Allah when we pray.

Condition 5: Intention (Niyyah)

Class, condition number five is Intention, also called Niyyah in Arabic. Niyyah means the intention we have in our hearts. Before you start praying, you decide in your heart which prayer you're going to pray and that you're doing it only for Allah. That's the most important part. Do we say this intention out loud? We keep it inside. It is between us and Allah. Don't worry if your friend doesn't say anything – their intention is in their heart. Let me give you an example. Before Dhuhr prayer, a boy named Musa thinks to himself, 'I intend to pray four rak'ah of Dhuhr for Allah.' Then he starts. Simple, right? Having the right intention makes our prayer sincere – that's ikhlas. It becomes special because we are doing it only for Allah. That's what makes our prayer accepted.
