The lesson

Assalamu alaikum, class! Think about when you get ready for school or the mosque. How do you choose what to wear? First, Islamic dressing is part of our good character, which we call 'akhlaq' in Arabic. When we dress properly, we show that we have good manners and we respect ourselves and others. Next, Allah loves modesty. Modesty is called 'haya'. It means being humble and not showing off. In our clothes, we should cover our bodies properly. For example, boys wear clothes that cover from the belly button to the knees, and girls wear hijabs. Finally, we dress to please Allah and to show respect. When we dress modestly, we are obeying Allah's command. This makes Allah happy and shows respect to everyone around us. Remember, dressing with manners is a beautiful part of being a Muslim. It shows good character, modesty, and respect. Done, class!

Assalamu alaikum class! The Sunnah means the way of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This sentence reminds us that following the Sunnah means dressing with modesty. Modest means we cover our bodies properly and do not wear clothes that show off or attract too much attention. The key guidelines for boys. First, boys must cover from the navel to the knees. This part of the body is called the awrah. It must always be covered, even when playing at home. Second, the clothes should be loose, not tight or see-through. Tight clothes show the shape of the body, and transparent clothes show skin. That is not modest. Wear clothes that are comfortable and cover properly. Third, here are good examples from our Kenyan culture. Many boys wear a kanzu with a kofia when going to the mosque. For everyday, you can wear modest shorts and a shirt, or trousers that are not too tight. These follow the Sunnah way. To remember: cover your awrah, wear loose clothes, and follow the good examples like kanzu and kofia. That is how we dress with modesty, and it pleases Allah. Great job everyone!

Assalamu Alaikum, everyone! The first guideline: Girls should cover everything except their face and hands. In Islam, we call this the awrah. For example, wearing a hijab that covers your hair and neck is a great start. Second, clothes must be loose – not thin or tight. They should not show the shape of your body. Think of a long dress or a skirt and blouse that is comfortable and not tight. Third, here are some examples you may know: a hijab with a long dress, or a skirt and a blouse. Here in Kenya, many girls wear these styles to school and at home. That's the Sunnah way! To wrap up: modest dressing means covering well (except face and hands), wearing loose clothes, and choosing outfits like those we see every day. Let's talk about why it matters.

Today we will learn about dressing for different occasions. It is important to dress properly to show respect and be comfortable. Let us start with school. At school, we wear a clean uniform. For example, a green dress or shirt and trousers. This shows we are ready to learn and obey the school rules. When we go to the mosque, we wear our best and clean clothes. Boys can wear a kanzu and kofia, and girls can wear a hijab and a long dress. This shows respect for Allah and the mosque. At home, we can wear comfortable clothes, but we must still be modest. When playing, wear clothes that let you move easily but still cover your awrah. Modesty is important everywhere. You have learned how to dress for school, mosque, home, and play. Let us think a little deeper.

Worked examples

– Dressing for Jumu'ah (Friday Prayer)

Here we have two children: Ali and Aisha. They are getting ready to go to the mosque for Friday prayer. First, let's talk about Ali. What does he wear? Ali puts on a clean white kanzu – that's a long robe – and a kofia cap on his head. He makes sure everything is clean and tidy. This shows respect for the prayer. Aisha. Aisha wears her best hijab to cover her hair, and a long floral dress. Her clothes are modest and respectful. Both Ali and Aisha choose clothes that are modest because they are going to pray to Allah. Dressing well for Friday prayer is a Sunnah – something the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to do. Done, Ali and Aisha!

– Dressing for School

Our second example: dressing for school. We'll see how Hassan and Zainab dress modestly while wearing their school uniform. Here is Hassan's outfit: trousers and a shirt, plus a sports coat for cold days. This follows the school dress code and keeps him warm. Here is Zainab: a long-sleeve dress with a white hijab that matches. Her clothing covers her properly. Both make sure their uniform is not tight or transparent. That is an important Islamic rule for modesty. Always remember, when you dress for school, wear the uniform proudly but make sure it is modest. That is part of good character.

– Dressing for a Family Gathering

A worked example. Imagine it's Eid day and you are visiting your family for a big gathering. How should you dress? Omar wears a new kanzu — that's a long white robe that many Muslim men wear for special occasions. He also puts on a kofia, a small cap, and smart shoes. He looks clean and respectful. Fatima wears an embroidered dress. 'Embroidered' means it has beautiful designs sewn into the fabric. She also wears a matching hijab which covers her hair. She looks modest and elegant. Omar and Fatima avoid imitating styles that go against Islamic modesty. They choose clothes that are not too tight or too flashy. They dress in a way that shows respect for themselves and their faith. When you go to a family gathering like Eid, remember to dress modestly but nicely — just like Omar and Fatima. Great job, everyone!
