The lesson

Assalamu alaikum, children! This is a story from long ago, but it is still very important to us today. Let's listen carefully. First, we will find out when and where Prophet Muhammad was born. He was born in Makkah, in the Year of the Elephant — that's a very long time ago! His family was from the Banu Hashim tribe. Do you know the name of his father? His father was Abdullah, and his mother was Amina. Here in Kenya, we remember this story every year during Maulid. In places like Mombasa and Lamu, people have big celebrations with parades and prayers. Have you ever seen Maulid celebrations? It is a happy time when we remember the Prophet's birth. First, we will know the main events of the story. Second, we will remember the names of the Prophet's family. Third, we will be able to retell the story in the right order. That sounds exciting, doesn't it?

You know in Kenya, when we celebrate Maulid in Nairobi or Mombasa, we remember the birth of Prophet Muhammad. That birth happened in this special year. Yes, this year was so special that we call it the Year of the Elephant. It happened a long time ago, in 570 CE. That is when Prophet Muhammad was born. Peace be upon him. Listen to this amazing story. A big army from Yemen came with huge elephants. They wanted to destroy the Ka'bah in Makkah. Imagine elephants marching! That is why it is called the Year of the Elephant. Allah saved His house. He sent small birds called Ababil. Each bird carried a tiny stone. They dropped the stones on the army. The elephants ran away, and the army could not destroy the Ka'bah. This shows that Allah always protects what is His.

Let's learn about the family of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.). At this picture. The Prophet belonged to a big tribe called Quraysh. This tribe lived in Makkah, a city far away from Kenya. We still love and follow the Prophet here in Nairobi and Mombasa. Inside the Quraysh tribe, there was a special family called Banu Hashim. They were kind and helped people who came to Makkah. That's why everyone respected them. Here is the family tree. This is Abdul Muttalib, the Prophet's grandfather. He was a leader of Banu Hashim and took care of the family. Abdul Muttalib had a son named Abdullah. Abdullah married a lady named Amina. They were the parents of our Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.). From Abdullah and Amina came our dear Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.). Allah blessed us with him. Sadly, Abdullah passed away before Muhammad was born. Abdul Muttalib took care of him and loved him very much. Remember: Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) came from the Quraysh tribe and the Banu Hashim family. His father was Abdullah, his mother was Amina, and his grandfather was Abdul Muttalib. When you celebrate Maulid in Kenya, think about this beautiful family.

Today we will learn a beautiful story – the story of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). At the title: 'The Birth of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.)'. It means our Prophet was born into this world. That was a very happy day! When was he born? The slide says: Monday, 12th Rabi' al-Awwal. Where? In Makkah, a city far away. We still celebrate his birthday here in Kenya. See the wonderful signs! A bright light shone. Even animals talked! Allah showed that this baby was very special. His mother named him Muhammad, which means 'the praised one'. In Kenya, we celebrate with joy! We sing songs and tell stories. In Lamu, there is a big Maulid festival. Today we learned: Prophet Muhammad brought light and blessing. We love our Prophet!

Great job, everyone! We learned the beautiful story of our Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him—how he was born right here in Makkah. Do you remember the name of that special year? It is called the Year of the Elephant. In Kenya, we love to tell this story during Maulid celebrations in Nairobi and Mombasa. In that year, a big elephant army came to attack the Kaaba. Allah protected it—He sent birds that threw small pebbles, and the army could not do anything! Allah is the best protector. Let's remember the Prophet's family. His father was Abdullah, and his mother was Amina. Abdullah was his father's name… can you say it with me? Abdullah. His mother was Amina. Very good! The Prophet belonged to the Banu Hashim family, a noble family from the Quraysh tribe. His grandfather was called Abdul Muttalib. That is a long name, but I know you can say it: Abdul Muttalib. To wrap up: Prophet Muhammad was born in Makkah, in the Year of the Elephant. His family was the Banu Hashim. Allah saved the Kaaba from the elephant army. As a special homework, try to retell this story to someone at home—your parent, your grandparent, or even your friend. They will love hearing it from you!

Worked examples

– Putting the Year of the Elephant in Order

Let's put the Year of the Elephant story in order, just like we hear during Maulid here in Kenya. First, Abraha built a big church in Yemen. He wanted people to go there instead of Makkah. Next, Abraha became angry and led an army with elephants to attack the Ka'bah. Then, when they got near Makkah, Allah sent huge flocks of birds called Ababil. The birds threw small clay stones. The army was destroyed! The Ka'bah was saved. At our timeline table—it shows all four steps in order: Abraha's anger, army marches, birds attack, Ka'bah saved. Great job, everyone!

– Our Prophet's Family Connections

Who is in his family? First, who is the Prophet's father? His name is Abdullah. Can you say 'Abdullah'? Point to his name on the screen. Next, who is his mother? Her name is Amina. Say 'Amina' with me. For her name. Who is the Prophet's grandfather? His name is Abdul Muttalib. Say 'Abdul Muttalib'. The Prophet's family name is Banu Hashim, also called Hashimi. Just like you have family names like Mwangi or Omondi, the Prophet's family name is Hashimi. In Kenya, we have many family names like Mwangi, Omondi, or Wanjiku. The Prophet's family name is Hashimi. Can you say 'Hashimi'?

– Retelling the Birth Story

Let's practice retelling the birth story of Prophet Muhammad. This is a very special story we love to tell during Maulid celebrations in Nairobi and Mombasa. Step one: the time. It was the month of Rabi' al-Awwal, in the Year of the Elephant. Step two: the place. He was born in Makkah, inside the home of his mother, Amina. Makkah is a very important city far away. Step three: the baby. His name is Muhammad, which means 'the praised one'. He is our beloved Prophet, peace be upon him. Step four: the news. When Abdul Muttalib heard the news, he was very happy and he thanked Allah for this blessed baby. You try! Use these keywords: Makkah, Amina, Muhammad, and Rabi' al-Awwal. Tell the story to your partner. Remember the four steps we just practiced.
