The lesson

At this title with me: 'Tunajali Mazingira' — which means 'We Care for the Environment' in Kiswahili. Who here has heard the word 'mazingira' before? It means our environment — everything around us, like the trees, the animals, the rivers, and the soil. Allah, the Most Merciful, created this whole beautiful world for us. He made the sun, the moon, the rain, the plants, and the animals. Because Allah created all of this, He asks us to take care of it. What do you think happens if we do not take care of something that belongs to someone else? Let's read this together: 'Allah created the world. Our first way to care for the environment is 'Usafi' — cleanliness. In Islam, cleanliness is very important. Do you know the Arabic word for cleanliness? It is 'najafa' — and it means keeping your body, your clothes, your home, and your school clean. When we throw rubbish in the bin instead of on the ground, we are showing 'najafa.' We are caring for Allah's creation. Next is 'Kupanda Miti' — planting trees. Trees are very special. They give us shade under the hot sun, they give us fruits like mangoes and avocados, and they give us clean air to breathe. Can you think of a tree you have seen near your home? Maybe a mango tree or an acacia tree? When you plant a tree, you are doing something good for Allah's creation for many years to come. Finally, 'Kuhifadhi Viumbe' — protecting creatures. Allah created so many wonderful creatures — birds, chickens, cows, cats, even the small ants. Every single one of them has a purpose. We must be kind to them holistically. That means we do not harm them, we give them clean water if they need it, and we let them live in peace. This is part of having good 'Akhlaq' — good character.

Let's quickly review what we learned about caring for the earth. We learned that cleanliness – which is called najafa in Arabic – is part of our iman, our faith. We also learned to plant trees, like mango or acacia, and to protect animals. This is how we show love for Allah's creation. Here is your challenge for this week: choose just one – clean one place at home or school, plant one seed (maybe a bean or a flower), or help one creature (feed a stray cat or give water to a bird). One small action makes a big difference! Always remember: the earth is a trust from Allah. He gave it to us to care for, not to harm. Take good care of it. I am so proud of you for learning how to be caretakers of the earth. Let's share what you plan to do this week!

Worked examples

Usafi ni Imani (Cleanliness is Faith)

Assalamu Alaikum, class! Today we learn something very special: 'Usafi ni Imani' – Cleanliness is Faith. In Islam, being clean shows our faith in Allah. Let's find out why! Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: 'Cleanliness is half of faith.' That means when we keep ourselves and our environment clean, it's like we are doing half of our faith! Subhanallah, isn't that amazing? This is Amina. After lunch, she cleans her classroom. She sweeps the floor, wipes the desks, and puts all rubbish in the bin. See how she is practicing cleanliness? Masha Allah! When we keep our environment clean, we show love for Allah. He loves those who are clean and pure. Let's all try to be like Amina and keep our homes, school, and hearts clean!

Kupanda Miti (Planting Trees)

Something truly beautiful — planting trees! We already know that Muslims care for Allah's creation. Today, we'll see how planting a tree is a special act of kindness and faith. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, gave us wonderful guidance about this. Let's read what he said. He said: "If you have a seed, plant it — even if the Day of Judgment comes." That's amazing, isn't it? Even if the world were ending, we should still plant. Why? Because the act of planting is good in itself — it shows our trust in Allah and our love for all living things. Trees give us so many gifts. Fruits like mangoes and pawpaw to eat, cool shade to rest under on a hot day, and clean air to breathe. Allah provides us all these through trees. Subhanallah! Here is Kiprono, a boy just like you. Kiprono plants a mango tree at his home. One day, that tree will give him sweet mangoes to eat. Not only that — it will give shade to birds and people, and it will help make the air clean. What a wonderful thing he has done! This is a sadaqah jariyah — a good deed that keeps giving, even after we are gone. You can plant local trees like Acacia, Mango, or Pawpaw right here in Kenya. They are easy to grow and they help our country stay green. We too can be like Kiprono and the Prophet's followers. Remember: When you plant a tree, you are showing kindness to Allah's creation. You are following the Sunnah. You are leaving a gift for everyone. Let's be people who plant, not cut down.

Kulinda Viumbe vya Mwenyezi Mungu (Protecting Allah's Creation)

We've learned so much about protecting Allah's creation. The title: 'Kulinda Viumbe vya Mwenyezi Mungu' — Protecting Allah's Creation. We have one more worked example to help us think about how to care for the creatures around us. This one is called 'Juma and the Baby Bird.' Juma finds a baby bird that fell from its nest. What do you think Juma should do? Leave it on the ground? Juma carefully puts it back into its nest. That is exactly what we should do — help the little creature, not hurt it. Here are some important rules for taking care of Allah's creation: Do not waste water — water is a gift from Allah. Do not break branches from trees, even mango trees or acacia trees. Do not hurt animals. Every plant and animal is special. Remember, protecting creation is not just a good thing to do — it is a form of worship. When we treat animals kindly and take care of our environment, Allah is pleased with us. That makes our actions very special. Great job, everyone! You have learned how to care for Allah's creation — the animals, the plants, the water. Always remember to be kind, just like Juma was kind to the baby bird. Thank you for your wonderful participation!

Practice questions

  • What should we do with rubbish? Take a moment to think.
  • Throwing rubbish on the ground or leaving it under the desk makes our place dirty and can harm animals. Remember, being clean is part of good Akhlaq — good character.
  • The correct answers are A, C, and D. Trees give us shade, block the sun, and make our air clean.
  • For the second question, who said 'Plant a tree even if it is the Day of Judgment'? It was Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
  • This question is a short-answer one. I want you to write down one thing you will do this week to care for Allah's creation.
