The lesson

We're starting a new topic, and I think it's one that touches all our lives. Have you ever forgiven someone? Maybe a friend who said something unkind, or a brother or sister who broke your toy. Take a moment and think about that feeling. Here's an example. Imagine a classmate borrowed your pencil without asking, and then it got lost. You might feel upset, right? What if that classmate says sorry? Can you choose to forgive them? This is from Matthew chapter 18, verses 21 and 22. Peter, one of Jesus' disciples, asked Jesus how many times he should forgive someone. Peter thought maybe seven times was enough. Listen to what Jesus said... Jesus told Peter to forgive 'seventy times seven.' Now, that's not 490 times exactly. Jesus means we should forgive without keeping count. Just like how your mum or dad doesn't count how many times they forgive you — they just do it because they love you. That's the kind of forgiveness Jesus is talking about. What does that really mean? First, it's not a number to count. Second, it means we should always have a heart ready to forgive, even when it's hard. It's about letting go of anger and choosing peace instead. By the end of this lesson, I want each of you to understand what forgiveness truly means. I want us to practice it in our daily lives — at home, at school, with friends and family. Forgiveness is not always easy, but it is a beautiful gift we can give to others — and to ourselves. Think about it: when you forgive, you let go of the heavy feeling in your heart, and you feel lighter. That's God's love working through you. Great job, everyone!

We have come to the final part of our lesson. Our big takeaway: Forgiveness is not about counting how many times someone hurts us. It is always choosing love, just like Jesus showed us. Even if a friend borrows your pencil without asking, or a brother breaks your toy, we forgive because God forgives us first. Here is your challenge: Try to forgive someone today, even if it is hard. Maybe someone said something unkind, or took something that belongs to you. When you forgive, you set your heart free. You don't have to wait until you feel like it – you can choose to forgive because God helps you. Let's close with a prayer. You can pray along in your heart. Dear Jesus, thank you for teaching us to forgive. Please help us to forgive others from our hearts, even when it is difficult. Fill us with your love so we can let go of anger. Amen. Wonderful job today, everyone! You learned a very important lesson. Go and share God's love by forgiving others. See you next time!

Worked examples

Forgiving a Classmate

A real-life example. Here is a story about forgiving a classmate. Imagine this: during break, your classmate accidentally spills juice on your new book. How would you feel? Maybe angry or sad. We can choose to forgive. Step 1: Pause and take a deep breath. This helps you calm down before you react. Step 2: Remember Jesus' teaching about forgiveness. He taught us to forgive others, just like God forgives us. Step 3: Choose to forgive and say, 'I forgive you.' Those words can heal a friendship. What happens when you forgive? You feel peaceful inside, and your friendship stays strong. That's a wonderful outcome.

Forgiving a Sibling

Another example of forgiveness. This one is about forgiving a sibling at home. Imagine your younger brother is playing and accidentally breaks your favourite toy. You might feel angry or sad. Remember, forgiveness can heal that hurt. Step one: Express your hurt calmly. Tell your brother how you feel without yelling. Step two: Listen to his apology. He might say sorry and mean it. Step three: Choose to forgive and give him a hug. That shows you truly forgive. These steps help you both feel better. The outcome is wonderful! Your relationship grows stronger, and you both learn to be kind. When someone hurts you, try these steps. Forgiveness brings peace.

Forgiving a Parent

Another worked example: Forgiving a Parent. We've practiced forgiving friends; now let's see how forgiveness works when an adult — even your mum — makes a mistake. Here's the scenario. Your mother forgets to pick you up from school because she was busy with something important. That can be frustrating, right? Remember, adults are human too — they make mistakes just like we do. How do we handle this? We follow these steps. Step one: understand that she is sorry. She didn't mean to forget you. Step two: remember that love covers mistakes. Your mum loves you, and that love is bigger than one mistake. Step three: say 'It's okay, Mum' and give her a smile. That simple act can make everything better. At the outcome. Mum feels grateful, and you learn patience and forgiveness. It's a beautiful win-win. Forgiveness strengthens your relationship and builds your own character. I'd like you to think about your own life. Have you ever needed to forgive a parent or an adult? What made it easy or hard? Let's share our thoughts.

Practice questions
