The lesson

Have you ever heard that word before? It means being special for God, like being set apart to do what He wants. First, we will learn what it means to be holy like God. Then, we will look at a special Bible verse – 1 Peter 1:15-16. It says, 'But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: Be holy, because I am holy.' That means God wants us to be like Him – good and pure in everything we do. Think about when you help your friends at school, or when you tell the truth even when it's hard – those are ways to be holy. God calls us to be holy in all we do, not just on Sundays.

We are going to answer the question: What is holiness? Has anyone ever heard that word before? Holiness simply means being 'set apart for God.' Think about your best plate at home — the one your mom only brings out when the chief or a very important guest comes to visit. That plate is special, and you don't use it for everyday meals. In the same way, when we are holy, we are special and set apart for God. Being holy means we live in a way that pleases God. It's like choosing to do what is right, even when no one is watching. For example, sharing your snacks with a friend who forgot theirs, or telling the truth even when you're afraid of getting into trouble — those are ways we live holy lives. The Bible tells us in 1 Peter 1:15-16, 'Just as God who called you is holy, so you must be holy in everything you do.' So God is our example. He is perfectly good and pure, and He wants us to be like Him. That means we try our best to be kind, honest, and loving every day.

I am very happy to see all of you. Our topic is 'Called to Be Holy,' from 1 Peter 1:15-16. Here is the verse. It says, 'But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do.' This means God is perfectly good and pure, and He wants us to be good in everything we do — at home, at school, and even on the playground. Have you ever tried to copy someone you really admire? We are called to copy God's goodness! What does 'holy' mean? In simple words, it means being set apart for God, like a special friend of God. Think of it like this: when you have a special visitor at home, you use your best plates and your best manners. We are God's special people, so we try to think good thoughts, say kind words, and do the right things. The Bible doesn't leave us guessing. It tells us what this means for us in our daily lives. It means we try to be like God in our thoughts, words, and actions. For example, when you are playing football and someone pushes you, instead of shouting or pushing back, you can pause and forgive. That is being holy in your actions. When you share your lunch with a friend who forgot theirs, that is holiness too. God sees those small acts of kindness and smiles because you are being like Him.

At our title – "God is Holy." That means God is completely good and pure. Let's find out more. Here it says, "God is completely good and pure. That is holiness." Imagine being perfect in every way – no mistakes, no bad thoughts, only goodness. That's God. Even the best person you know is not as good as God. At this: "Sunrise and kindness reflect God's holiness." When you see a beautiful sunrise in the morning, or when someone shares their lunch with a friend, that is a little glimpse of God's goodness. Kindness comes from God because He is holy. Here is the amazing part: "We are called to reflect God's holiness in our own lives." That means we try to be good, kind, and pure just like God. When you help your mum carry water, or when you tell the truth even when it's hard, you are showing a little bit of God's holiness.

At the title: 'What We Learned Today.' We have covered something very important. We learned that holiness means being special for God—set apart. Just like you set aside your best clothes for a special day, God wants us to be set apart for Him. We read from 1 Peter 1:15-16 that God says, 'Be holy, because I am holy.' So being holy is about living like God—doing what is right and good in our everyday life, whether at home, at school, or playing with friends. Let's finish with a prayer. At the words: 'Let's Pray Together.' I want us to close our eyes and talk to God about being holy. Let's pray together: 'Dear God, help us to be holy in all we do. Amen.' You can say that in your heart or out loud. God bless you all.

Worked examples

Finding a Lost Pencil

This will help us understand what it means to be a holy person in real life. Imagine you are walking in your classroom and you see a nice pencil lying on the floor. It looks new, and no one is around. What would you do? Let's think about what a holy person would do. Here is the big question: What would a holy person do? Remember, being holy means being special for God and doing what God wants. Think about what God would want you to do with that pencil. A holy person would try to find the owner. They would ask classmates or tell the teacher, because honesty pleases God. God wants us to be truthful and kind, even with small things like a pencil. This is how we live as holy people every day. Remember: whenever you find something that isn't yours, you can be holy by doing the right thing. Great job thinking through this example!

Temptation to Cheat

Another real-life example. This is about something that might happen to you at school — the temptation to cheat. Imagine this: You're sitting in a test, and your friend leans over and asks you to share answers. Maybe you're worried, maybe you don't want to let them down. What do you do? Here's the key question: What would a holy person do? Remember, being holy means being special for God — doing what He wants, even when it's hard. A holy person would say no kindly and do their own work. Why? Because God values honesty. After the test, you could even offer to help your friend study for next time. That's what loving your neighbour looks like. Remember: when you face a difficult choice, ask yourself — what would a holy person do? Choose what makes God happy, and He will be proud of you.

Speaking Rudely

Our third worked example: Speaking Rudely. This shows us how being holy affects the words we use. Imagine this: your little brother accidentally spills water on your homework. You feel angry, right? That's a normal reaction. What would a holy person do? The question asks: What would a holy person say or do in this situation? Think about it for a moment. The answer is: take a deep breath and speak calmly. Remember that God wants us to be kind even when we are upset. That's what holiness looks like in our words — choosing kindness even when we feel angry.

Practice questions

  • Here are the questions. First: What does the word 'holy' mean?
  • Great job, everyone! For question one, the correct answer is 'being set apart for God'.
  • Think about it this way: In our daily lives, we can show we are set apart for God by the way we act – being honest, kind, and respectful even when no one is watching. It's not about being perfect but about living in a way that honors God.
  • Your friend wants you to say a mean word about another student. What should you do?
  • You have extra snacks. How could you be holy?
  • Both questions test the same big idea: holiness isn't a big, far-away thing. It's the small, everyday choices we make—choosing kindness, standing up for what's right, and sharing with others.
