The lesson

It is about a man named Nicodemus who met Jesus. We will find out who Nicodemus was and why he came to Jesus at night. Was he afraid? Was he curious? We will see! Then we will learn what Jesus meant when He said we must be 'born again'. What does that mean? It is not like being born from your mother again — we will explain it in a simple way. Finally, we will see how much God loves us. His love is so big that He gave us His Son, Jesus. Isn't that amazing? I want you to think about something. Have you ever gone to ask an elder or your teacher a very important question? Maybe you were shy or nervous. That is exactly what Nicodemus did — he went to Jesus at night because he had big questions. Take a moment to think: What important question would you ask if you could meet someone very wise?

He was a Pharisee and a Jewish leader — let's find out more about him. First, Nicodemus was a Pharisee. A Pharisee was a special teacher who knew God's laws very well — like a teacher who knows every single rule in the school handbook. He was also a Jewish leader, part of a group called the Sanhedrin — like a council of important people. Notice this: he came to Jesus at night. Maybe he was afraid of what other leaders would think, or maybe he wanted a quiet, private talk without distractions. Nicodemus had seen the amazing miracles Jesus did — healing sick people and more. He believed that God was with Jesus, so he wanted to learn from him. We know who Nicodemus was: a Pharisee, a Jewish leader, and a curious man who came to Jesus at night because he wanted to understand more. Great job, everyone!

A very special story. It's called The Secret Night Visit. A man named Nicodemus came to Jesus at night because he wanted to learn more. Nicodemus was a teacher himself. He said to Jesus, 'We know you are a teacher from God.' He respected Jesus. He had questions. Jesus answered with something amazing. He said, 'You must be born again to see God's kingdom.' That's like saying you need a fresh start, a new beginning. When a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, it's a new life. That's what Jesus meant. Nicodemus was puzzled. He thought about being born as a baby again. 'How can an old man go back into his mother's tummy?' he asked. Jesus was talking about a spiritual new beginning. Tonight, Nicodemus learned that following Jesus means starting a new life with God.

Have you ever heard someone say they are 'born again'? Let's find out what Jesus meant. First, Jesus was not talking about being born a second time from your mother. That's impossible! He meant a new birth — not physical, but spiritual. A new beginning inside your heart. Imagine a tiny seed planted in the ground. That seed grows into a big, strong tree. That's a new kind of life. In Kenya, we also see caterpillars change into beautiful butterflies. That's a huge transformation! Being born again is like that — God changes you on the inside. When you are born again, God gives you a new heart and a new spirit. You start to love God, love others, and want to do what is right. It's the most wonderful gift!

A man named Nicodemus came to Jesus at night because he was confused. The slide says 'Nicodemus' Confusion.' Let's see what he was confused about. Nicodemus asked Jesus, 'How can an old man be born again?' He was thinking about physical birth, like a baby being born. Jesus meant something different. Jesus said we must be born of water. That means baptism. When we are baptized, it's like being washed clean. In Kenya, when you are baptized, you go into water and come out clean on the inside. Then Jesus said we must also be born of the Spirit. That means God's power changes our hearts. Just like a seed grows into a plant with water and sun, God's Spirit helps us grow and become better. Jesus used an example: the wind. You can't see the wind, but you can feel it and see what it does — leaves moving, clothes drying. It's the same with the Holy Spirit. We can't see God, but we can see his work in our lives. Nicodemus learned that being born again is not about going back into your mother's tummy. It's about having a new start with God through baptism and the Holy Spirit.

Done, everyone! We've reached the end of our lesson. First, Nicodemus went to Jesus because he was searching for truth. He knew Jesus had the answers from God. Second, Jesus said we must be born again. That means God gives us a new heart — like a seed that becomes a new plant. Third, God loves the world so much that He sent His Son Jesus so that everyone who trusts in Him can live forever with God. Finally, because of that, you can start a new life with Jesus today! You can pray to him and follow him every day. I'd like you to discuss with your partner: What is one way you can show that you have a new heart from God? How can you be kind or forgive someone, just like Jesus teaches us?

Worked examples

From Old to New

A story. It shows how something old can become new – just like a mango seed! We are going to follow a mango seed on its journey. You know how a small seed can become a big tree? First, the seed is planted in the ground. It looks dead, doesn't it? Inside, something is about to happen. Then, with water and sunshine, a tiny shoot comes out. The seed is waking up! It starts to grow. After many days, the seed becomes a strong mango tree. It gives sweet fruit. Something small and dead became big and alive! Here is the important part: when we trust Jesus, the same thing happens. Our old ways start to change, and we grow into something new – like the mango tree. Isn't that amazing?

Why Was Nicodemus Stuck?

Nicodemus was a very smart man — a top teacher on Earth. When Jesus talked about being born again, Nicodemus couldn't understand. Why? Imagine a Grade 1 student trying to read a Secondary School book. The book has big words and hard ideas. No matter how hard the little student tries, they get stuck! Why? Because their mind is not ready for that level yet. That's exactly what happened to Nicodemus. He was using his own earthly thinking to understand a heavenly truth. It just didn't fit. Nicodemus was Earth's best teacher, but he missed Heaven's lesson. He knew all the rules and traditions, but he didn't know how to listen to God in a new way. His mind was full of old ideas. When Jesus said 'you must be born again,' it sounded like nonsense to him. What did Nicodemus need? He needed a new mind — not a new physical brain, but a new way of understanding God's ways. That new mind comes from the Holy Spirit. We can't figure out God just by thinking hard. We need the Holy Spirit to teach us from inside.

Receiving the Gift of Salvation

A clear example of how to receive the gift of salvation. I want you to imagine you are receiving a special gift — like a new shirt or a piece of fruit from your friend. Step one: The gift is offered. God already gave us Jesus. That's like your friend holding out a gift for you. It's already there — you just need to receive it. Step two: You must open your hands to receive it. That means believing in Jesus. If someone gives you a shuka and you keep your hands closed, you can't take it. You open your hands — that's faith! Step three: You thank the giver. In Kenya, after you receive a gift, you say 'Asante!' and maybe even obey what the giver asks. For salvation, we show thanks by following Jesus and obeying his teachings. At this example from our Kenyan tradition. When you get a gift like fruit or a shuka, you receive it with both hands and a happy heart, and you say 'Asante!' That's exactly how we receive salvation — with joy and thanks.

Application: How Can You Live This Lesson?

We come to the last part of our lesson. How can we take what we learned and live it out in our everyday lives? First, remember you can talk to Jesus anytime — even at night, just like Nicodemus did! You don't need a special place or time. Second, ask God to help you understand His Word. If you read the Bible and don't understand, pray and say, 'God, please help me understand.' Third, share the good news! Tell a friend or family member about John 3:16 — that God loves the world so much He gave His Son. Fourth, you can pray this simple prayer: 'Dear God, thank You for loving me. I want to be born again. Help me follow Jesus.' So today we learned about being born again — it's a gift from God.
