The lesson

Assalamu Alaykum, everyone! My name is your teacher, and I'm so excited to be learning with you. We will learn about this from the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which are called Hadith. Take a look at the screen. These are the key points we will cover. First, a big greeting to you all! What does it mean to dress nicely? What does it mean to dress modestly? These are questions the Prophet ﷺ answered for us. We will focus on modesty — and this applies to both boys and girls. Everyone has a role to play in dressing well and respectfully. This shape here represents our topic: 'Hadith on Dressing.' Think of Hadith as a guidebook — the Prophet's own words and actions — showing us the best way to live. When it comes to dressing, the Prophet ﷺ taught us to be clean, to be neat, and most importantly, to be modest. For example, in Kenya, we have many different styles of clothing, but as Muslims, we should choose clothes that cover our bodies properly and make us feel proud but humble. Our journey today is simple: we will understand what modesty means in dressing, according to the beautiful example of our Prophet ﷺ.

Assalamu Alaikum! By the end of our lesson, you will be able to understand the importance of modest dress in Islam, identify guidelines from the Hadith (the teachings of Prophet Muhammad), and apply these to your life here in Kenya. First, let's talk about the importance. Dressing modestly is a command from Allah and a sign of respect. It protects our dignity and helps us focus on our character rather than our appearance. Second, we will look at the guidelines from the Hadith. For example, Abu Daud recorded teachings on how boys and girls should dress. These are not just rules — they are guidance for living a good life. Third, we will apply these teachings to everyday situations here in Kenya. How do we dress for school, for prayers, or for family events? By the end of this lesson, you'll have practical answers. Inshallah, it will be a beneficial session.

Assalamu alaikum, everyone! Hadith are the sayings and actions of our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. They help us follow the Quran and show us how to live as good Muslims. For example, today we will focus on a special Hadith from Abu-Daud about how we should dress.

Class, let's start with today's topic: Why Modesty in Dressing? First, modesty — or haya in Arabic — is actually a part of our faith in Islam. It's not just about clothes; it's about having a sense of respect and humility in how we present ourselves. Think of it like this: when we dress modestly, we show respect for ourselves and, most importantly, for Allah. It's like saying, 'I value what Allah has taught me about how to live a good life.' Modesty also protects us. Just like a fence protects a garden, dressing modestly helps keep us safe and focused on what really matters — like our character and our relationship with Allah. Finally, when we dress modestly, we become good examples in our community. People see us and think, 'Wow, that person has self-respect and dignity.' That's a powerful way to inspire others. Remember: modesty is about faith, respect, protection, and being a role model. These are great reasons to embrace it in our daily lives.

A very important teaching from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ about how we should dress. This Hadith comes from Abu-Daud and it's all about being humble with our clothes. The Prophet said: 'Whoever wears a garment of pride and vanity, Allah will clothe him with a garment of humiliation on the Day of Resurrection.' That's a strong warning — showing off with our clothes is something Allah does not like. What does this mean for us, especially as Grade 6 students in Kenya? It means we should avoid showy or immodest clothing. Both boys and girls should cover their bodies properly according to Islamic guidelines. This is about modesty, not about being fancy or trying to impress others. Notice the words 'pride and vanity' — that's the key. When you choose your clothes, ask yourself: Am I wearing this to show off, or to cover myself properly and please Allah? That's the lesson we can take from this Hadith. Remember: dress modestly, avoid pride, and cover your body as Allah guides us. Let's keep this teaching in our hearts.

Great job, everyone! Let's quickly review what we've learned today about dressing modestly. First and most important: dressing modestly is a command from Allah and the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. This isn't just a cultural habit—it's an act of worship. Second, we learned the specific guidelines: boys cover from navel to knees, and girls cover everything except face and hands, with loose-fitting clothes. Third, we avoid pride, tightness, and transparency in our clothing. Our clothes should reflect humility and obedience to Allah, not show off. Finally, the good news: we can wear modest versions of our beautiful Kenyan traditional clothes like kanzu, hijab, or long skirts. Modesty fits perfectly with our culture! I hope you all feel confident in applying these teachings. Remember, modesty is a beautiful part of our faith.

Worked examples

School Uniform

Let's apply what we've learned with a worked example. Amina needs to choose a school uniform. Which outfit is most appropriate? Here are three options. Let's evaluate each one. First, the long skirt with hijab. This outfit is modest — it covers the body properly and follows the Sunnah of our Prophet. This is the appropriate choice. Next, the short skirt. It's too short and doesn't cover properly. This is not suitable for school. Finally, the tight trousers. They show the shape of the body, which is not modest. This option is also not suitable. To summarize, the long skirt with hijab is the best choice because it covers well and follows our teachings.

Dressing for Friday Prayer

Let's work through another example about dressing for Jumu'ah. This one is about a boy named Ali. Here's the scenario: Ali wants to wear his best clothes to the mosque. What should he choose? Think for a moment before we look at the options. One choice is a kanzu — a long, traditional robe that many people wear for prayer. It's clean and respectful. Another good option is a simple shirt and trousers. As long as they are clean and not too flashy, that works perfectly fine too. The key point is that clothes should be clean, modest, and not flashy — this shows respect for the prayer. Whether it's a kanzu or shirt and trousers, the most important thing is the intention to honor the occasion. For Ali, either option is great as long as his clothes are clean and modest. That's the lesson from this example.

Dressing for a Family Gatherig

This one is about dressing for a family gathering. Fatima wants to look nice, but she also wants to follow Islamic guidelines on modesty. Here's the scenario: Fatima is going to a family party. She has a beautiful kitenge dress she'd love to wear. Her cousin shows up in a very short dress. Fatima wonders — is it okay to dress like that? What would you do in her shoes? Here's the key point: a loose, modest kitenge dress is not only beautiful — it's exactly the kind of outfit that pleases Allah. Modesty doesn't mean being dull. It means choosing styles that cover properly and show respect for yourself and your faith. Before we wrap up this example, let's think deeply about this question — how can we follow fashion while still obeying Allah?

Practice questions

  • In Islam, boys must cover from the navel to the knees. That's the correct answer — option A.
  • The Hadith narrated by Abu-Daud warns against being proud and boastful about the clothes you wear — option A. Allah dislikes arrogance, and the Prophet taught us to dress modestly, not to show off.
  • These two questions covered the basic ruling for boys' dress and the attitude we should have about clothing. Keep these lessons in mind as we continue.
  • The second question asked why modesty matters in Islam. The answer is to obey Allah, not to show off or be popular.
  • Great job working through these examples. Keep these ideas in mind as you go about your day — choosing modest clothes and actions is a way to remember Allah and earn His pleasure.
