The lesson

At this word – 'Technology.' Today we will learn what it means and see examples all around us. Here is the big idea: Technology is anything made by people to help us. Think of something that helps you – like a phone to call your mum, or a TV to watch cartoons. All of those are technology. Phones – you use them to talk to friends and family far away. That is technology helping us communicate. TVs – you watch your favourite shows and learn new things. That is technology for entertainment and education. Computers – you can type, draw, play games, and even do homework on them. All these are examples of technology. Remember: if a person made it to help you, it is technology. Today we will learn more about these devices and how to use them safely.

These are our technology friends. They help us every day. We use them every day! Around your home. You might see a phone, a TV, or a computer. They are all our technology friends. First, the phone. A phone is small and fits in your pocket. You can call Mama on it. You can send a text to Baba. In Kenya, many people use phones to talk to family far away. Do you like using a phone? Next is the TV. TV has a big screen in your sitting room. You can watch cartoons like 'Akili and Me'. You can also watch news with your family. It is fun to sit together and watch! Last is the computer. You might have computers at school. People also use them in offices. With a computer you can type, learn new things, and even draw. It is a very useful friend! Today we met three technology friends: phone, TV, and computer. They help us call, watch, and learn. Which one do you like best? Great, class! Let's keep learning.

Great job learning about different devices! Let's talk about something very important — how to use them safely. Remember, these are tools to help us, but we must be careful, just like when you cross a busy road in Nairobi. First rule: Never touch plugs or wires with wet hands. Water and electricity do not mix! Think of it like this — after washing your hands at the water tap, always dry them well before you use your phone or computer. What could happen if we don't? Second rule: Do not drop or throw your devices. Phones and tablets are like eggs — they break easily! If you drop them from a matatu, the screen might crack, and then it won't work. Always hold your device with two hands. Third rule: Always ask an adult before using the phone or computer. Maybe you want to play a game or call your grandmother — that's great! First, ask your parent, teacher, or older brother. They will help you use it the right way. Last rule: Never share your personal information online. This means your full name, your school, or your home address. Imagine a stranger at the market asking where you live — you would not tell them, right? Same thing on the internet. Keep it private.

At the title – can you say it with me? 'What does digital mean?' Great! Digital means something that uses numbers inside a device. A device is like a computer, a phone, or a tablet. When something is digital, it lives inside a machine using numbers. Think about your exercise book at school. You write on paper with a pencil. That is not digital. Inside a computer, your work is stored as numbers. That is digital! When you go for a passport photo – like the one on your ID card – the camera takes the picture and stores it in a computer. It is not printed on paper yet. That is digital! Your school report card? Your teacher might have it on the computer. That is digital too. Remember – your digital information belongs to you. Keep it private. Do not share your passwords or personal things with people you don't know. Stay safe online! Today we learned that 'digital' means using numbers in a device. Many things around us are digital – like photos and report cards. We must keep our digital stuff safe. Done, everyone!

Technology is all the machines and tools that help us every day. This list shows three wonderful things technology does. First, it helps us learn. Think of the computer at school or the tablet you use to watch videos about animals. Technology makes learning fun! Second, technology helps us play and connect with our family. Maybe you play a game on a phone, or you call your grandmother in Nairobi using a video call. Third, when we use technology safely, we enjoy it more. That means asking an adult before using the internet, and not sharing our private information. Safe and happy technology use! Today, let's remember to thank the phones, TVs, and computers in our lives. They are helpful tools. Great job, everyone!

Worked examples

Which One Is a Phone?

At picture A. It is small. It has buttons and a screen. This is a phone! We use it to call people far away. At picture B. It is a big box with a big screen. This is a television, or TV. We watch shows on it, but we do not use it to call people. Picture C has many pages with words and pictures. This is a book. We read books to learn stories, but we cannot call anyone with a book. The answer is picture A. That is the phone. Great job, everyone! You know how to spot a phone.

Using the Computer Safely

Our worked example: Using the Computer Safely. Follow these steps every time you use a computer. Step one: Sit straight. Keep your eyes at a safe distance from the screen. That means you should not sit too close. Your back should be straight, like a tree. Step two: Use both hands to type. Touch the keyboard gently. Do not press too hard. Think of it like playing the piano — soft and gentle. Step three: Click the mouse only when you mean to. Do not bang it. The mouse is your friend, not a toy to hit. Step four: Here is an example. Teacher Wambui shows how to open a learning game. You double-click the icon to start. See? Simple and safe. You know the safe steps. Remember them every time you use a computer.

Who Helps Us with Technology?

At this picture. Amina finds a phone on the ground near the kiosk. What should she do? Let's learn the steps. Step one: Do not turn on the phone. Do not call anyone. Just leave it. Step two: Take the phone to Mama or the shopkeeper. They can help. Step three: The grown-up will find the owner. They know how to return it. The lesson is: Always be honest. Do not use the phone. Give it to an adult. That is the right thing.
